The Foundations of Kinesiology

Kinesiology emerged from chiropractic in the 1960s when Dr. George Goodheart discovered that specific muscles showed weakness in relation to specific organ imbalances. This became Applied Kinesiology — later developed into a broader holistic framework by practitioners including Dr. John Diamond and Gordon Stokes.

The underlying principle is that muscle response (strong or weak under light manual pressure) reflects the state of the nervous system and provides biofeedback about the body's needs.

What Muscle Testing Can Reveal

Muscle monitoring acts as a communication system with the body. In a kinesiology session, testing can identify:

  • Structural misalignment and postural patterns
  • Nutritional deficiencies or intolerances (specific foods or substances)
  • Emotional patterns stored in the body
  • Energetic blocks along meridian pathways
  • Stressors from the environment or relationships
  • The body's priority for healing — what it needs addressed first

A Kinesiology Session at Health Therapies Clinics

Sessions involve light, non-invasive manual pressure applied to specific muscles while you hold thoughts, substances, or positions. You remain fully clothed throughout. Corrections may include acupressure, specific exercises, emotional release techniques, nutritional suggestions, or sound and vibrational work.

No two sessions are alike — the body's biofeedback guides the session dynamically.

What Kinesiology Addresses

Kinesiology is used for a wide range of presentations:

  • Food sensitivities and nutritional imbalances
  • Chronic fatigue and energy issues
  • Stress, anxiety, and emotional holding patterns
  • Learning difficulties and focus issues
  • Phobias and performance anxiety
  • Chronic pain and physical holding patterns
  • Digestive complaints
Your body already knows what it needs — kinesiology simply listens with the right tools.

Research Perspective

A 2020 narrative review in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies noted kinesiology's growing evidence base for stress reduction and musculoskeletal outcomes, identifying muscle testing reliability as an area of ongoing research focus.
