Naturopath Scope and Training
Naturopaths in Australia typically complete a 4-year Bachelor or Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy (or related combined degrees). They can order and interpret a wide range of functional tests, prescribe herbal medicine and supplements, and provide dietary and lifestyle medicine.
Naturopaths are not registered under AHPRA (most complementary medicine professions are self-regulated) but are members of professional bodies (ANTA, NHAA) with their own codes of conduct.
Integrative GP Scope
An integrative GP holds an MBBS degree and is AHPRA-registered as a medical practitioner, with additional training in complementary modalities (acupuncture, nutritional medicine, herbal medicine, mind-body medicine). They can prescribe pharmaceuticals, order Medicare-rebated pathology, and refer to specialists.
Integrative GPs offer conventional and complementary medicine in one consultation — particularly valuable for patients on multiple medications or with complex medical histories.
Working Together
Naturopaths and integrative GPs complement each other beautifully. Many of our patients see both — using their naturopath for comprehensive lifestyle and natural medicine support, and their integrative GP for medical oversight, pharmaceutical management, and Medicare-rebated testing.
Key Takeaways
- Naturopaths are natural medicine specialists; integrative GPs are medical doctors with complementary training
- Naturopaths cannot prescribe pharmaceuticals or order Medicare-rebated pathology
- Integrative GPs can do both — with a complementary medicine lens
- Both can refer to and communicate with each other as part of a care team
- Most patients benefit from both roles working in coordination
