Evidence-informed Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture in Freshwater — serving Manly, Dee Why, Brookvale and the Northern Beaches community.
Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most extensively researched forms of medicine in the world. Originating in China over 2,500 years ago, it uses the precise placement of fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body to stimulate the body's own healing responses. At Health Therapies Clinics in Freshwater, our acupuncturists integrate the classical principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with an understanding of contemporary Western physiology and neuroscience.
From a TCM perspective, health depends on the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy) through pathways called meridians. When this flow becomes blocked or deficient — through injury, stress, poor diet, emotional strain or environmental factors — pain and illness result. Acupuncture restores balance by removing these blockages and encouraging the body's natural regulatory capacity.
Modern research offers complementary explanations. Acupuncture points correspond to areas rich in nerve bundles, connective tissue and mast cells. Needling stimulates the release of endorphins, serotonin and other neurotransmitters; reduces local and systemic inflammation; modulates the autonomic nervous system; and influences the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis — the body's central stress-response pathway. This makes acupuncture genuinely effective for a broad spectrum of conditions, not simply because of belief or placebo.
Our Freshwater acupuncturists support patients from across the Northern Beaches — from Manly and Queenscliff to Dee Why, Brookvale and Narraweena — with a wide range of health concerns:
This is not an exhaustive list. If you're unsure whether acupuncture is appropriate for your condition, call us on (02) 9427 5696 for a brief phone consultation before booking.
Private health rebates claimable on the spot via HICAPS terminal.
Your initial consultation at our Freshwater clinic is thorough and unhurried. Your acupuncturist will spend the first 30 to 40 minutes taking a detailed health history — covering your primary complaint, sleep, digestion, energy, emotional state and any current medications. In TCM, these seemingly unrelated details are interconnected, and understanding them is essential to forming an accurate diagnosis.
The assessment also includes pulse diagnosis (feeling the quality, rate and rhythm of the pulse at three positions on each wrist) and tongue inspection — both traditional diagnostic methods that offer information about internal organ function and the nature of any imbalance.
Treatment follows. You'll lie comfortably on a professional treatment table while ultra-fine, single-use sterile needles are inserted at selected acupuncture points. Most people are surprised by how gentle needling feels — you may notice a brief sensation of warmth, tingling or a dull heaviness (known in Chinese medicine as De Qi), which is considered a sign that the point is being activated.
Needles are typically retained for 20 to 30 minutes while you rest deeply — many patients fall asleep. After treatment, your practitioner will discuss their findings, explain your diagnosis in plain language, and outline a recommended treatment plan.
Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal. Many acupuncture points are located on the lower arms, lower legs and abdomen. Gowns and draping are provided — your modesty and comfort are always respected.
Have a light meal 1–2 hours beforehand — avoid coming on an empty stomach. Stay well hydrated. Avoid alcohol or intense exercise immediately before treatment.
Many people feel deeply relaxed or mildly drowsy after acupuncture. Drink plenty of water and allow yourself to rest if possible. Light activity is fine; strenuous exercise on the same day is best avoided.
All acupuncturists at Health Therapies Clinics are registered with AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) and must meet ongoing continuing professional development requirements. We use only single-use, sterile, disposable needles — there is no risk of cross-infection.
We have an on-site HICAPS terminal for instant private health claiming. Medibank, BUPA, HCF, NIB, HBF, AHM and most other major funds cover acupuncture under extras cover. You pay only the gap on the day — no forms to lodge, no waiting for reimbursement.
Acupuncture is among the best-supported natural therapies for musculoskeletal pain. It is particularly effective for chronic back pain, neck stiffness, tension headaches, osteoarthritis, shoulder impingement and nerve pain conditions such as sciatica. For Northern Beaches residents with an active lifestyle — surfers, trail runners, cyclists — acupuncture offers both acute injury support and longer-term injury prevention by improving tissue recovery and reducing muscle tension.
Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to support the female reproductive system. It helps regulate the menstrual cycle, reduce period pain (dysmenorrhoea), calm PMS symptoms, support hormonal balance in conditions such as PCOS and endometriosis, and ease the transition through perimenopause and menopause. See our dedicated Women's Health page for more detail.
Acupuncture is widely used as an adjunct to both natural conception and assisted reproductive technology (ART) including IVF. Research suggests it may improve uterine blood flow, support follicle development, regulate ovulation and reduce the physiological stress that can impair fertility. Our clinic offers specialised fertility acupuncture protocols for both women and men. Visit our Fertility page for full details.
The parasympathetic effects of acupuncture — calming the nervous system, reducing cortisol and promoting the release of serotonin — make it a particularly valuable tool for managing stress, anxiety, burnout and sleep disorders. Regular treatment can help break cycles of chronic tension and support a more resilient stress response over time.
TCM has always considered digestion central to health. Acupuncture can be effective for IBS, bloating, reflux, chronic constipation, nausea and other functional digestive complaints — conditions that are often driven by a combination of gut motility issues, stress and nervous system dysregulation, all of which acupuncture is well positioned to address.
Acupuncture supports immune function by modulating inflammatory cytokines and improving the body's adaptive immune response. It is used to reduce the frequency of colds and flu, manage allergic rhinitis and hayfever, and support recovery from respiratory infections.
Our clinic also offers a full range of complementary treatments including Chinese herbal medicine, remedial massage, naturopathy and kinesiology, which are often used alongside acupuncture for enhanced outcomes.
Acupuncture needles are extraordinarily fine — about the width of a human hair — and nothing like the hypodermic needles used for injections or blood tests. Most people feel little to no discomfort on insertion. You may notice a brief sensation of warmth, mild tingling or a dull heaviness at the needle site; this is normal and usually indicates the point is responding. Many patients are so relaxed during treatment that they fall asleep. If you experience any sharp or persistent discomfort, tell your practitioner immediately — they can adjust the placement or technique.
This depends on your condition, how long you've had it and your overall health. Acute problems — a recent muscle strain, for example — may respond significantly in 3 to 6 sessions. Chronic or complex conditions typically require a longer course of treatment, often 8 to 12 sessions over several months, with the frequency reducing as improvement is established. Hormonal and fertility cases often follow monthly cycle-based protocols. Your practitioner will outline a realistic treatment plan at your initial consultation and reassess progress regularly. Maintenance sessions (monthly or seasonal) are popular with patients who use acupuncture as part of their long-term wellbeing routine.
Yes, in most cases. Acupuncture is covered under the extras component of most private health insurance policies in Australia. We have a HICAPS terminal at Health Therapies Clinics, which means your rebate is processed automatically when you pay — you simply pay the gap. The rebate amount depends on your specific fund and level of cover. We accept Medibank, BUPA, HCF, NIB, HBF, AHM and all other major funds. We recommend checking your policy details before your first appointment to understand your annual limits.
Acupuncture is widely used during pregnancy for morning sickness, back and pelvic pain, fatigue, oedema and breech presentation (in the third trimester). It is considered safe when performed by a qualified, AHPRA-registered acupuncturist who is experienced in pregnancy care. There are specific acupuncture points that are contraindicated during pregnancy, and your practitioner will be fully aware of these. Always inform your practitioner if you are pregnant or trying to conceive so they can tailor treatment appropriately. We also recommend informing your obstetrician or midwife that you are receiving acupuncture.
In most cases, yes. Acupuncture does not have direct pharmacological interactions with medications. However, your practitioner needs to know about all current medications and supplements, particularly blood thinners (anticoagulants such as warfarin), as these may increase bruising at needle sites. If you are on any medications, please list them on your health intake form before your first appointment. Your practitioner may also recommend that you inform your prescribing GP that you are pursuing acupuncture as part of your overall health care, particularly for complex conditions.
