Integrative Psychotherapy

A Whole-Person Approach to Mental Wellbeing

Psychotherapy at Health Therapies Clinics, Lane Cove takes an integrative stance — meaning your therapist draws from multiple evidence-based modalities rather than applying a single rigid framework. This flexibility allows treatment to be genuinely responsive to who you are, what you are experiencing, and what resonates with you.

Our approach weaves together Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for patterns of thinking and behaviour, mindfulness-based practices for present-moment awareness and emotional regulation, somatic therapy for the body's role in holding and processing stress, and relational therapy for understanding how our histories with others shape our inner world today.

Sessions are held in a private, warm and confidential environment at our Lane Cove clinic, convenient for clients travelling from Artarmon, St Leonards, Crows Nest, Neutral Bay and across the North Shore. We also offer telehealth sessions for clients who prefer to meet remotely.

Conditions We Support

Our psychotherapist works with a broad range of presentations. No concern is too small or too complex — the therapeutic relationship itself is often as important as any technique applied.

Anxiety & Worry

Generalised anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, health anxiety and phobias. We address both the cognitive patterns that fuel anxiety and the physiological arousal held in the body.

Depression & Low Mood

Persistent sadness, low motivation, anhedonia, hopelessness and withdrawal. Therapy explores the underlying beliefs, relational patterns and lifestyle factors maintaining low mood.

Trauma & PTSD

Single-incident trauma, complex developmental trauma, PTSD and post-traumatic growth. Somatic and trauma-informed approaches prevent re-traumatisation while building safety and resilience.

Grief & Loss

Bereavement, anticipatory grief, perinatal loss, relationship endings and the loss of identity, health or role. Therapy holds space for grief without rushing the process.

Burnout & Stress

Occupational burnout, chronic stress, compassion fatigue and the exhaustion of sustained high performance. We address root causes alongside immediate symptom relief.

Life Transitions

Career changes, divorce, parenthood, relocation, retirement and identity shifts. Therapy provides a thinking space when life feels uncertain or overwhelming.

The Therapeutic Modalities

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT examines the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It helps you identify automatic negative thought patterns, test their accuracy and develop more balanced and adaptive ways of responding. CBT is one of the most extensively researched psychological interventions and is particularly effective for anxiety and depression.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Drawing from Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness practices help you develop a different relationship with your thoughts and feelings — observing them without being overwhelmed. Regular mindfulness practice supports emotional regulation, reduces rumination and increases tolerance of discomfort.

Somatic Therapy

The body holds the story of our lives. Somatic therapy attends to physical sensations, posture, breath and movement as entry points into the nervous system's stored experiences. For trauma in particular, talking alone is often insufficient — the body must be included in the healing process.

Medicare Mental Health Care Plans

If you are an Australian resident with a Medicare card, you may be eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) through your GP. An MHCP allows you to access Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual therapy sessions per calendar year with an eligible psychologist or mental health practitioner.

To access this, you will need to:

  • Book a longer GP appointment (typically 20–40 minutes) and discuss your mental health concerns
  • Receive a Mental Health Care Plan referral naming a specific practitioner or service
  • Bring the plan to your first therapy appointment
  • Return to your GP after every six sessions for a review if you wish to continue

Please contact our clinic before booking to confirm current rebate eligibility and Medicare provider status, as these arrangements can change.

Telehealth Available

For clients in North Sydney, Chatswood, Willoughby or further afield who prefer remote sessions, we offer confidential psychotherapy via secure video call. Telehealth sessions are available at the same rate as in-person appointments and can be particularly helpful for those with caring responsibilities or mobility considerations.

What to Expect in a Session

Many people feel nervous before their first psychotherapy appointment, particularly if they have not spoken with a therapist before. Here is an honest overview of what the process typically involves.

First Session

Your first session is a mutual assessment — an opportunity for you to share what has brought you to therapy, and for your therapist to understand your history, current situation and what you are hoping to change. There is no pressure to disclose more than feels comfortable. By the end, you will have a shared sense of the therapeutic focus and how frequently you might meet.

Ongoing Work

Subsequent sessions build on an evolving therapeutic relationship. There may be structured exercises, homework between sessions, exploration of past experiences, body-based practices or creative approaches depending on your needs. Sessions are collaborative — your therapist does not simply advise or prescribe, but works with you as a partner in the process.

Endings & Review

Therapy endings are planned collaboratively and are themselves an important part of the therapeutic process. Most clients have a clear sense of when they are ready to pause or end — often after a period of monthly or fortnightly "maintenance" sessions. Returning at a later time is always welcome; life brings new challenges at new stages.

Frequently Asked Questions

While the terms are often used interchangeably, psychotherapy typically involves more in-depth exploration of past experiences, patterns and the unconscious dimensions of life. Counselling tends to be shorter-term and more problem-focused. Our therapist is trained in both and will adapt the depth and style of work to what you need.

No referral is required to book a psychotherapy appointment. However, if you wish to access Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Care Plan, you will need a GP referral. You can book directly for privately-funded sessions at any time.

This varies considerably depending on the nature of your concerns, your goals and how you engage with the process. Some people benefit greatly from six to eight focused sessions; others working with long-standing trauma or complex presentations engage in therapy over a year or more. Your therapist will give you an honest estimate after your initial consultation.

Yes, with standard exceptions. All sessions are confidential. Exceptions apply where there is risk of serious harm to yourself or others, where legally required (such as court orders), or where mandatory reporting obligations exist. Your therapist will explain these limits clearly at your first session.

Absolutely. Our multi-practitioner model means you can receive psychotherapy alongside acupuncture, naturopathy, sound therapy or other modalities offered at Health Therapies Clinics. Many clients find that combining body-based and talk-based therapies produces results neither approach achieves alone. Practitioners communicate (with your consent) to ensure care is coordinated.
