Trying to conceive can affect body, mind and relationships. This article looks at how acupuncture, counselling and other supportive therapies may fit around medical fertility care for people who want extra support.
People going through fertility treatment often say the hardest parts are not always the procedures. It can be the waiting between appointments, the hope and disappointment of each cycle, and trying to keep work and relationships steady at the same time. Medical care remains at the centre, but many also look for ways to care for their emotional wellbeing along the way.
Acupuncture comes from traditional Chinese medicine, which has a long history of use in reproductive wellbeing. Traditionally, practitioners describe it as supporting the flow of Qi and Blood to the reproductive organs. That is the language of TCM theory, not an established medical explanation, and we present it that way.
What people often report is more practical: a session gives them a quiet hour to rest, breathe and feel looked after. Some find that helps them feel calmer during a stressful time.
Studies have looked at acupuncture around embryo transfer, and the findings so far are mixed. Research is ongoing, so it would not be accurate to say acupuncture changes the chances of IVF working. We see it as a supportive extra, not a fertility treatment.
Some people start supportive therapies a few months before an IVF cycle, while others begin during treatment. Whatever you choose, let your fertility specialist know about every complementary therapy and any herbs or supplements, as some may interact with medication.
Our multi-therapy clinic in Lane Cove brings several practitioners under one roof, so you can choose the combination of support that feels right for you, alongside the care of your GP and fertility team.
