Living with endometriosis: building a support team

12:22 pm 7 April 2025 Sanda 0 Comments

Endometriosis can touch many parts of life, from work and sleep to mood and relationships. This article looks at how medical care and supportive therapies such as acupuncture and counselling can work together.

A condition that affects more than the pelvis

People with endometriosis often talk about how far its effects reach. Painful periods and pelvic pain are common, but so are tiredness, days missed from work or study, and the frustration of a long road to diagnosis. The condition occurs when tissue resembling the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, and it can also be linked with fertility challenges.

Start with medical care

A GP and gynaecologist are central to diagnosing and managing endometriosis. Treatment may include pain medication, hormonal options or surgery. Supportive therapies are best seen as additions to that plan, never replacements.

Supportive therapies people explore

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is drawn from traditional Chinese medicine. In TCM theory, menstrual pain is often described as a blockage in the flow of Qi and Blood, and treatment is traditionally aimed at restoring movement. This is a traditional explanation rather than a scientific one. Many people simply find sessions a restful break that helps them feel more relaxed. Studies on acupuncture for period pain and endometriosis are ongoing, with mixed results, so we make no claims about pain outcomes.

Chinese herbal medicine

Herbal formulas are traditionally tailored to each person. Always tell your doctor about any herbs you take, as some can interact with prescribed medication.

Counselling

Living with a long-term condition can be emotionally heavy. Counselling offers a place to work through frustration, worry or grief, and to find ways of explaining your needs to others.

Massage

Gentle massage may help some people unwind when they feel tense or fatigued.

Putting the pieces together

  • Keep a simple symptom diary to share with your doctor.
  • Choose supportive therapies that feel manageable, not overwhelming.
  • Let every practitioner know what treatments you are having.
