Integrative fertility care at our Freshwater clinic. Natural conception, IVF support, male fertility and unexplained infertility — serving Manly, Dee Why, Brookvale and the Northern Beaches.
The fertility journey can be one of the most emotionally and physically demanding experiences a person or couple faces. Whether you are just beginning to try to conceive, have been trying for some time without success, or are navigating the complex world of assisted reproductive technology (ART), integrative support from a skilled team of practitioners can make a meaningful difference — both clinically and in terms of how supported and informed you feel throughout the process.
At Health Therapies Clinics in Freshwater, we provide holistic fertility support that combines acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, naturopathy and lifestyle guidance. We work with couples and individuals from across the Northern Beaches — Manly, Dee Why, Brookvale, Collaroy, Queenscliff, Narraweena and beyond — at every stage of their fertility journey.
Our approach is not a replacement for fertility medicine. We work alongside your fertility specialist, reproductive endocrinologist, gynaecologist and GP. Clear communication between all parties in your care is something we take seriously and facilitate actively.
Integrative fertility support can improve conditions for conception, enhance IVF outcomes and improve overall reproductive health — but it does not guarantee pregnancy. We will always be honest with you about what we can and cannot offer, and we will work thoughtfully with the information available from your medical investigations. If at any stage we feel you need a referral or a different level of care, we will tell you directly.
Optimising reproductive health through cycle regulation, ovulation support, uterine lining preparation and general vitality for couples trying to conceive naturally. Includes preconception care for both partners.
Acupuncture timed to key stages of the IVF cycle — stimulation, egg retrieval, embryo transfer and the two-week wait. Evidence supports potential improvements in implantation rates and cycle outcomes when acupuncture is used alongside IVF.
Addressing the underlying drivers of ovulatory dysfunction in PCOS — insulin resistance, androgen excess, irregular cycles — through acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional support and lifestyle modification.
When investigations return normal results but conception hasn't occurred, integrative medicine can explore subtle contributing factors — immune function, inflammatory markers, sperm quality, stress physiology and cycle phase imbalances.
Reducing inflammation, supporting immune regulation and addressing the cycle disturbances that make conception more difficult in the presence of endometriosis. Coordinated care with your gynaecologist.
Sperm quality — count, motility, morphology and DNA fragmentation — is a factor in approximately 40-50% of infertility cases. Acupuncture and targeted nutritional supplementation can meaningfully improve sperm parameters over a 3-month maturation cycle.
Support for couples who have experienced miscarriage — addressing potential contributing factors including immune regulation, hormonal insufficiency, clotting tendencies and sperm DNA fragmentation. Sensitive, thorough and compassionate care.
Integrative support for women with diminished ovarian reserve or early menopause — improving egg quality where possible, supporting hormonal balance and working alongside your reproductive specialist.
Fertility acupuncture works on multiple physiological pathways. It improves blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, supports follicle development and egg quality, regulates the HPO axis governing the menstrual cycle, reduces cortisol and the inflammatory signalling that can impair implantation, and addresses the substantial stress load that accompanies the fertility journey itself.
For IVF patients, acupuncture is typically scheduled around egg collection and embryo transfer — but beginning treatment 2 to 3 months before your cycle starts is strongly recommended for maximum benefit, as this corresponds to the maturation period of the eggs involved in your cycle.
For natural conception, treatment is structured around the menstrual cycle, with different acupuncture points and herbal formulas used in the follicular, ovulatory, luteal and menstrual phases.
Herbal medicine is one of the most powerful tools in the fertility practitioner's kit, particularly for conditions involving hormonal imbalance, poor endometrial receptivity, sperm quality issues and PCOS. Prescriptions are cycled and adjusted monthly, mirroring the hormonal shifts of the menstrual cycle.
Important: If you are undergoing IVF, herbal medicine should not be taken during your stimulation or support phase without explicit approval from your fertility specialist and our practitioners. We work closely with your IVF clinic to determine safe timing.
Nutritional medicine and evidence-based supplementation play a critical role in fertility. Key nutrients — folate (or methylfolate for those with MTHFR), CoQ10 for egg and sperm mitochondrial health, vitamin D, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and iron — are assessed and supplemented based on your blood test results and dietary intake. Gut health, weight and metabolic health are addressed where relevant.
The impact of lifestyle on fertility is well established and often underestimated. Sleep quality, exercise type and intensity, stress management, environmental toxin exposure, alcohol, caffeine and smoking all affect reproductive health. Our practitioners provide personalised, realistic lifestyle guidance — not a list of rules, but a thoughtful conversation about where meaningful changes are most likely to make a difference for your specific situation.
We understand that Northern Beaches life is active and health-conscious — most of our patients are already doing many things right. Sometimes the conversation is about what to add; sometimes it is about what to reduce. Either way, it is non-judgmental and evidence-informed.
A thorough review of your reproductive and general health history, cycle charting data, investigation results, medications, lifestyle and goals. Your practitioner will explain their assessment and outline a treatment plan for the first 3 months.
Weekly acupuncture, herbal prescription (if appropriate), nutritional assessment and supplementation. Cycle tracking and basal body temperature charting (where relevant). Coordination with your GP or fertility specialist if investigations are in progress.
Treatment frequency may reduce to fortnightly or cycle-based. Prescription refinements based on cycle response. For IVF patients, this is where we coordinate scheduling around your clinic's calendar and plan acupuncture appointments around your retrieval and transfer dates.
Many patients continue with acupuncture in the first trimester for support with implantation, early pregnancy symptoms (nausea, fatigue, anxiety) and miscarriage risk reduction. Treatment is adapted fully for pregnancy safety.
Ideally, begin 2 to 3 months before your IVF cycle starts. This corresponds to the maturation period of the follicles that will be stimulated in your cycle — treatment during this window can positively influence the quality of the developing eggs. If time doesn't allow for this, starting treatment even 4 to 6 weeks before your cycle still provides benefit. For embryo transfer, acupuncture on the day of or day before transfer is commonly used and has the most research support for this specific stage. If you are midway through an IVF cycle and just finding us now, please still get in touch — we can work with wherever you are.
A realistic minimum commitment is 3 months — one full egg maturation cycle. For couples with identified conditions (PCOS, endometriosis, low sperm morphology), 4 to 6 months is more typical. This reflects biology, not the limitations of the treatment: the eggs ovulated this month were recruited 3 months ago, and the sperm ejaculated today were produced approximately 72 days ago. Improvements to sperm and egg quality take time to manifest. Consistency matters enormously — the couples who get the best outcomes from integrative fertility support are those who engage fully and consistently over a defined period, even when it feels slow.
If male factor is present — low count, poor motility, poor morphology, high DNA fragmentation — then absolutely yes. Male fertility treatment with acupuncture and targeted supplementation over 3 months can produce clinically meaningful improvements in all sperm parameters. Even in the absence of a diagnosed male factor, we recommend both partners pursue a preconception health programme — optimising sperm quality reduces the risk of miscarriage and improves embryo viability, regardless of whether existing semen analysis results are in the "normal" range.
Yes — acupuncture during the stimulation phase of IVF is safe and commonly used to support follicle development, manage the discomfort and bloating associated with stimulation, and reduce anxiety. The acupuncture points used are carefully selected to be compatible with an active IVF cycle. Herbal medicine is generally suspended during stimulation and support phases unless specifically cleared by your fertility specialist. Your practitioner will coordinate carefully with your IVF clinic's protocols to ensure your treatment is complementary and safe at every stage.
"Unexplained infertility" is a diagnosis of exclusion — it means standard investigations have not identified a cause, not that there is no cause. Integrative medicine often finds factors that conventional diagnostics do not routinely examine: subtle hormonal imbalances, poor cycle phase timing, immune dysregulation, elevated sperm DNA fragmentation (not included in standard semen analysis), micronutrient deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction at subclinical levels, or stress physiology that is substantially impairing reproductive function. We also understand that timing and technique matter for natural conception, and cycle charting guidance alone can make a significant difference for some couples. We have helped many Northern Beaches couples with unexplained infertility go on to conceive — while always being honest that we cannot guarantee an outcome.
