Sound Sessions Are Popular, but Are They Right for You?

7:55 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Sound sessions fill wellness feeds and studio timetables. Before booking, it helps to be clear whether you want rest, psychological support or help with a symptom.

Popularity is not a health measure

Sound baths and gong sessions have become a fixture of wellness pages and studio timetables. When something is everywhere, it is easy to feel you are missing out. Popularity, however, only shows that people are curious; it cannot tell you whether a session will make any difference to a particular health concern.

Clarifying what you are looking for

At a clinic offering several therapies, the clearest starting point is your reason for booking. You might want:

  • a quiet, restful experience;
  • psychological treatment for something that has been troubling you;
  • help understanding a symptom that has persisted.

Each of these leads to a different conversation. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, offers sound sessions for relaxation at the Lane Cove clinic, and she also holds psychotherapy qualifications, so it is worth being clear about which kind of support you have in mind. A lingering symptom may also need your GP's input.

Judging a session on substance

Ask what a session actually involves: which instruments are used, whether you sit or lie down, and what happens if you want to stop. Price, novelty and glossy advertising are poor guides to value. A plain description lets you keep expectations reasonable and compare sound fairly with massage or other relaxing options.

Making the experience comfortable

Several details can be tailored, from how loud the instruments are and how close they sit, to whether you use a chair or a mat and when you take a break. Nobody expects a particular emotion from you, and lying motionless is optional. Speak up about what feels manageable, and remember that an enjoyable period of rest is a different thing from treatment of a medical condition.

Deciding at your own pace

Trying sound for enjoyment is a perfectly reasonable choice, as is deciding it is not for you. Some people find a single session is enough to satisfy curiosity; others like to return now and then simply because they enjoy it. If you would like to compare it with massage or counselling before booking, a short enquiry with the Lane Cove clinic can help you think through which option matches what you are hoping for.
