Building Emotional Skills Without Expecting Instant Change

8:15 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Recovery stories often focus on one memorable technique. Real change in how emotions are handled tends to be gradual, practised in context and reviewed along the way.

The trouble with tidy recovery stories

Stories of recovery often focus on one memorable moment: a breathing technique, a single session, a turning point. In reality, a person may have had several kinds of support while slowly learning new ways to handle emotions. Shrinking that process into one trick can leave others feeling they have failed when a technique does not transform things straight away.

Starting with a real situation

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, completed training in psychotherapy and offers talking therapy to adults in Lane Cove. A useful starting point is a specific situation in which emotions become hard to manage, such as conflict at home or pressure at work, and the response you would prefer to have next time.

Skills can be introduced gradually and practised in the context of your own life, then revisited to see what is helping and what needs adjusting.

What progress can look like

  • noticing a reaction a little earlier;
  • pausing before responding;
  • choosing a response more deliberately;
  • settling more readily after a difficult moment.

Progress is rarely about never feeling distressed again. Emotions remain part of life; the aim is a little more room to choose what happens next.

Keeping the work aligned with you

Therapy should reflect your priorities. Talk about what you want to understand, which changes feel hard and how you will notice movement. Christine can outline how the work will be reviewed and what else is available if things change between sessions. In an emergency, or if you are worried about your safety, call triple zero.

Comparing different kinds of support

Some people combine counselling with relaxing therapies such as massage, while others prefer to focus on talking therapy alone. Either can be reasonable, provided each part has a clear purpose. Patience with yourself matters throughout. A first conversation at the Lane Cove clinic can help clarify what kind of support makes sense for you right now.
