Hot Weather, Feeling Unwell and the Limits of Gua Sha

7:52 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Gua sha is a familiar summer remedy in many families. Feeling unwell in the heat can have serious causes, so safety and assessment come before any technique.

Heat-related symptoms come first

In some families, gua sha is the first thing reached for when summer brings headaches, fatigue or a heavy feeling. Sydney summers can be intense, and feeling unwell in the heat has many possible causes, including dehydration and heat illness that need prompt medical attention.

If someone is confused, vomiting, very hot, faint or getting worse, contact a doctor or emergency services rather than turning to scraping. A tradition linked to the season does not replace an assessment of how unwell a person is.

Bringing a non-urgent concern to the clinic

For milder, ongoing discomfort, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, can talk with you at the Lane Cove clinic about whether gua sha or another approach is appropriate. It helps to describe:

  • when the symptoms began and what you were doing;
  • how much water you have been drinking;
  • any medicines you take;
  • other symptoms, even if they seem unrelated.

The first question is what kind of care suits your situation. Choosing a technique simply because it is associated with summer puts things in the wrong order. Sometimes rest, fluids and a GP visit will be more sensible than any hands-on therapy.

Paying attention to skin afterwards

If gua sha is used, notice how your skin responds over the following days. At the start of any repeat visit, report soreness that has hung around, itching, or bruises that look out of place. Tool and pressure ought to be chosen for you, not to reproduce the vivid colour seen in summer photographs.

Based on what you report, she can suggest continuing, changing the approach or trying something different.

Weighing the options sensibly

At a clinic offering several therapies, it is natural to ask which one fits a seasonal complaint. Start with safety, then comfort, then preference. When the weather is hot and you are simply feeling flat, a calm conversation in Lane Cove can help you decide whether any treatment is needed at all.
