Practical steps that make psychological support easier to reach

7:14 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Wanting help and arranging help are two different hurdles. Here is how to identify the practical obstacle and make the first step feel smaller.

It is common to know you would like support and still not make the call. The barrier is often practical rather than emotional: worries about cost, finding a time that fits work or school pick-ups, language, or simply not knowing how to begin the conversation.

Naming the obstacle

Pinpointing which of these is holding you back can itself be a useful move. Once the barrier has a name, it becomes something you can ask about directly rather than a vague reason to wait another month.

Questions to ask the clinic

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, who also holds qualifications in psychotherapy, sees clients at the Lane Cove clinic. Before booking, you can ask about:

  • Fees and any payment arrangements.
  • Appointment times that are currently available.
  • Whether sessions are in person or another format.
  • Anything specific to your situation, such as language or accessibility needs.

If you do not know what to say

Write down a single concern on a piece of paper or in your phone. You can read it aloud at the start of the session if explaining everything at once feels too much. Christine can take the conversation from there at a pace that suits you.

No long commitment required upfront

Getting clear on practicalities does not mean signing up to months of sessions. It just makes the next step more manageable. In a multi-therapy clinic, some people begin with one service and later add another; others find that psychological support is all they need. Your GP can also discuss options, including whether a mental health care plan applies to you.

Shaping where it goes

Once you start, the direction should follow your priorities: what you want to understand, what feels stuck and how you would notice progress. Ask how the work will be reviewed and what to do if circumstances change between appointments. If you ever feel at risk, reach out to emergency services or a crisis line immediately.
