Thinking of adding Chinese herbal granules to supplements or prescriptions? Start with a complete list of what you take, keep the labelled bottle and directions together, and ask before changing anything.
In a clinic offering naturopathy and Chinese herbal medicine side by side, one question comes up often: can these be combined? The honest answer starts with a list, because a herbal product is still an active substance, however natural it sounds.
Herbal prescriptions from Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, at the Lane Cove clinic are a common part of this mix. What she prescribes arrives as concentrated granules in a bottle, which comes with written directions for the person it was prepared for.
Write down each prescription medicine, every supplement and any product ordered online, including anything a naturopath or another practitioner recommended. Better still, bring the containers themselves. Ask Christine what your granule product contains and who to contact if any part of the directions seems unclear.

A good question to ask at the outset is what you should do if you forget a dose or notice a new symptom. Knowing the answer early saves guesswork later.
Your plan should name the product clearly, explain how to measure and take it, and say when it will be reviewed. Keep the written sheet with the original labelled bottle. If your doctor changes a medicine, or your naturopath suggests something new, let Christine know so the combination can be looked at again. Should a symptom appear and you are unsure of the cause, contact the clinic for guidance rather than experimenting with the amount yourself.

Using several therapies at once tends to run more smoothly when each practitioner knows what the others have suggested. Your GP and pharmacist should hear about herbal products too. A single shared list, refreshed whenever something changes, keeps everyone on the same page. If you are still deciding whether herbs belong in your routine at all, that question alone is a reasonable reason to book a conversation.
