When a child is struggling, families often feel unsure where to turn. Recording the changes and seeking an age-appropriate assessment is a sensible first step.
Parents and carers often notice that something has changed before they can put it into words. A child may sleep poorly, withdraw from friends, resist going to school or seem more irritable. Knowing which service to approach can be just as confusing as the changes themselves.
A sensible first step is to write down what you have observed and ask a health professional nearby which assessment would suit your child.
Take these notes to your GP, a paediatrician or another appropriate child health professional. They can help decide what assessment is needed and which services suit your child's age and situation. If there are concerns about immediate safety, contact emergency services.
Not every service set up for adults is suitable for children or adolescents. Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, holds psychotherapy qualifications, and her psychological work takes place in Lane Cove. If you are thinking about support with Christine, ask about age suitability, how families are involved and whether specialist child assessment should come first.
Care for a young person needs to fit that particular young person, and sometimes that means a referral to a specialist child and adolescent service rather than a general practice.
Whatever service you choose, the plan should make space for what the child and family most want. Discuss what you hope to learn, what feels hardest at home or school, and which signs would show things are easing. Ask how often the plan will be revisited and what help exists if circumstances change.
Supporting a struggling child can be exhausting for parents too. Your own wellbeing matters, and support for carers is a legitimate reason to seek help. Start with your GP, and if you have questions about what is offered for families at the Lane Cove clinic, ask directly.
