Getting ready for cupping when you also exercise or get massage

7:17 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Cupping fits more easily into a busy week when you plan ahead. What to tell your practitioner, what to report during the session and what to ask before you leave.

For people who train regularly, book massages or have a wedding on the calendar, the timing of a cupping session matters. Marks can stay visible for a while, and aftercare may affect when you return to other activities. A little planning beforehand saves surprises.

Details to share before the cups go on

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, sees people for cupping in Lane Cove and will want to know about:

  • Sensitive skin or past reactions to cupping, tape or adhesives.
  • Recent procedures, injuries or sunburn.
  • Your plans for the coming days, such as a match, a gym session, a massage or an event in fitted or revealing clothes.

During the session

Say so straight away if the pulling becomes uncomfortable, if anything feels like burning, or if you start to feel dizzy or faint. Adjustments are easy when you speak up early.

Coordinating with your other therapies

If you also see a massage therapist, let them know when you have had cupping so they can avoid pressing on tender or marked areas. Likewise, tell Christine if you have had deep tissue work recently. Spacing therapies sensibly is often simpler than people expect, and a quick message between appointments is usually enough to keep everyone on the same page.

Before you head home

Ask which skin changes would be expected in your case, and who to contact if an area becomes painful, hot, blistered or simply different from what you were told to expect over the following days. One clear, personal aftercare plan is worth more than a pile of rules collected from the internet.

Judging how it went

Pick an everyday movement or symptom to discuss next time, and include comfort and skin recovery in that conversation. The decision to book again should come back to why you started, how you responded and what other options you could try, rather than how striking the marks looked in the mirror.
