Recognising a few herbs on a label does not tell you what a formula is for or whether it suits you. Similar-looking granule bottles can differ, so ask which product was chosen and where its directions are.
People who already use naturopathic products sometimes look at a Chinese herbal formula and recognise several names. It is natural to assume you could judge the formula by its parts. In traditional Chinese medicine, though, the prescription is considered as a whole, and always in relation to the individual taking it.
A traditional formula is not assembled by picking herbs with good reputations. Combination and proportion are weighed against how a person presents, according to traditional theory. Knowing what is in a friend's formula is not enough to recreate it, and it says nothing about whether it would suit you. Two granule bottles with similar names, or similar-looking contents, may differ in composition and carry different directions.

In Lane Cove, Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, welcomes this sort of questioning and sees it as part of an open, two-way discussion. Her herbal medicine is dispensed as granules in labelled bottles rather than mixed at home from an ingredient list.
Classical texts often list many conditions a formula has historically been used for. That history helps explain the tradition, but it is not evidence that the formula will be effective for every condition named. Avoid assembling your own mix from an online list, swapping in a bottle that merely looks alike, or reading a traditional description as a promise.

Check that you leave with written details: the product name, how much to measure and when, and a date for looking at it again. Store those notes next to the bottle itself. Tell Christine when a doctor or another practitioner changes your medicines or supplements, and tell your pharmacist about the herbal product too. If a symptom appears that you cannot explain, contact the clinic instead of adjusting the amount yourself.
