What a Hospital Acupuncture Department Can and Cannot Tell You

7:53 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

Long hospital profiles show how widely acupuncture is practised. They cannot tell you what suits your own problem, which is where a personal plan begins.

Big menus and individual needs

Hospital acupuncture departments overseas sometimes publish long profiles listing dozens of techniques, research projects and clinical areas. Reading one can be impressive, and it shows how widely acupuncture is practised. What such a document cannot show is whether your own condition will respond, or whether a local practitioner works in the same way.

The same caution applies when comparing therapies at a multi-service clinic: a broad list of what is available is a starting point, not a recommendation for you.

Illustrative, Freshwater: Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, sits by a patient in glasses with a fine needle in her forearm on a towel.

Narrowing the focus to your concern

When you meet Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, at the Lane Cove clinic, it helps to set the brochure aside and talk about your own situation. Useful questions include:

  • Which approach are you proposing for me?
  • Why does it relate to my problem?
  • How will we check my response?
  • What would make us change course?

You do not need access to every procedure ever described. You need a plan you can understand and that fits your circumstances. A focused conversation usually achieves more than a long catalogue of options.

Separating the symptom from the goal

It can help to name two things: the symptom bothering you, and where you would like to end up. Aims can be modest. Gardening with less ache, a clearer picture of what is going on, or knowing when to look for a different assessment are all reasonable.

Asking how acupuncture will be reviewed, and what would prompt a change, keeps the plan grounded in your experience rather than in a department's reputation.

Using overseas information wisely

Overseas profiles can still make interesting reading, and they sometimes reveal how acupuncture sits within a larger hospital system. If one prompts a question, write it down and raise it at your Lane Cove appointment, where Christine can explain how it does or does not apply to the care she offers.
