Research headlines about herbs and immunity often come from cell or animal studies of a single extract. Here is how to turn them into sensible questions about your own granule product and medicines.
A news story announces that a herb changes immune activity, and suddenly friends are asking where to buy it. People who use both naturopathic products and Chinese herbs are especially likely to come across these stories. Before acting on one, it helps to know what kind of research sits behind it.
Many such reports come from experiments on cells in a dish, studies in animals or tests of one particular extract at one strength. Findings of that kind are interesting, but they cannot tell an individual what to take or how much. A result about a single herb also says little about a bottled granule formula that combines several ingredients in a different preparation.

Think of a research report as a prompt for discussion rather than a shopping list. Useful questions include:
When Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, discusses herbs with people at the Lane Cove clinic, the focus stays on health history, current medicines and the reason for seeking care. Christine dispenses herbal medicine as granules in bottles, so bring the exact label of any product you already have and ask how the article you read relates to it, if at all. A vague promise about immunity is far too broad to shape a personal prescription.

Make sure your plan lists the product name, written measuring directions and a review date. Keep that sheet together with the original bottle. Tell Christine whenever a doctor or naturopath changes your medicines or supplements, and mention the herbal product to your GP and pharmacist as well. If a new symptom appears and you cannot tell whether it is linked, ask the clinic rather than altering the dose by guesswork.
A little scepticism is not about dismissing science. It simply keeps a headline in proportion while decisions are made around you as one particular person.
