Tai chi is a slow, coordinated sequence of movements practised with relaxed breathing and focused attention. Classes start with the basic stance and a few movements, and build up gradually; seated forms are available for people with limited mobility.
Research reviews support tai chi for balance and falls prevention in older adults, and it is widely used for joint stiffness, stress and general fitness. Tell the instructor about joint replacements, heart conditions or balance problems so the practice can be adapted.
Tai chi is a complement to medical care, not a replacement for it.
