Sticks, cones and other moxa forms: asking which suits you

7:32 pm 24 October 2026 0 Comments

A moxa stick in a photo is only one version of moxibustion. What forms exist, why the choice should be personal and what to tell your practitioner first.

If you have seen one picture of moxibustion, it was probably a glowing stick held above the skin. In reality, moxa, prepared from mugwort, comes in several forms, and heat can be delivered in different ways. For people weighing moxibustion against a heat pack or massage, knowing this helps set realistic expectations.

Common forms you might hear about

  • Sticks or rolls held at a distance from the skin.
  • Small cones placed on or near the body with a barrier.
  • Loose moxa used in boxes or other holders.
  • Smokeless or low-smoke versions designed for people sensitive to smoke.

A single photograph cannot tell you how your own session would be carried out.

Ask which form and why

Dr Christine Shen, Acupuncturist, can tell you at the Lane Cove clinic which form she has in mind for you and the reasons behind that choice. It is a fair question, and the answer should relate to your comfort, skin and breathing rather than tradition alone.

Share past reactions, wherever they happened

If you have ever reacted badly to smoke, incense or heat, mention it, even if it happened at home or at someone else's clinic. A cough from incense at a ceremony or a blister from a hot water bottle is relevant information.

Look past appearance and smell

The question that matters is whether a particular application suits you. The form that looks most traditional or smells strongest is not necessarily the most suitable, and sometimes a different source of warmth, or a different therapy, is the better fit.

Planning for comfort

Before any heat is used, agree on a signal for discomfort and on aftercare steps. Your skin sensation, skin health and sensitivity to smoke all shape those decisions. Keep instructions tailored to you; something you saw online or heard from a friend cannot stand in for advice about your body.
