Bowen Therapy is a holistic soft tissue therapy used to treat musculoskeletal issues, including back, neck, and limb problems, inflammation, and joint pain. Bowen Therapy is done through gentle manoeuvres over specific body parts to unlock the body's natural healing processes for the physical, emotional, and mental bodies. It is a remedial modality suitable for all ages, and all bodies, providing support for chronic and acute conditions, ongoing or intermittent pain.

How Does it Work?

Bowen Therapy is a type of bodywork done with movements to specific body areas. These movements work along the body's soft tissue, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Each movement is a rolling-based manoeuvre that stimulates receptors on nerve pathways within the connective tissue called fascia. This creates a response along the nerves, sending signals to the body's central nervous system to tell the body to return to a relaxed and balanced state and allowing the body to release any long-held tension that has been held within the fascia, muscles, and organs to restore it to its correct functional state. Bowen Therapy allows the body to return to its parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system for repair and healing to occur and out of everyday sympathetic-fight or flight response.

What To Expect During A Bowen Therapy Session

Your initial Bowen Therapy session will take 90 minutes, including a full body assessment to give you the best solution tailored to your body, including an after-care guide post-treatment. All follow-up sessions are 60 minutes long, with estimates included to determine your progress and further treatment plan.

Bowen Therapy is usually done lying down, but if mobility or pain is an issue, Bowen Therapy can also be done in a comfortable and supported seated position. The moves are performed on the skin or through light, comfortable clothing. After a series of movements, waits of a couple of minutes are allowed between each of the movements to allow the signal between the move and the fascia connection along the nerve pathway to integrate, allowing the body to come back into alignment.

While receiving Bowen Therapy, patients can experience a few sensations, including tingling, heat, cold, heaviness, lightness, and buzzing, as the body adjusts. Some patients may not experience any sensations, which doesn't mean it's not working. Bowen can continue to work up to a week after the treatment session.
